VMA Madness
Naked is the new black...or so says Miley Cyrus. This is Miley's latest fashion forward moment at last night's MTV VMA Awards. And this girl was the evening's host! Hard to believe that just 4 short years ago this girl was a bubble gum, tween queen Disney darling. I wonder if Walt is turning over in his grave?
Taylor Swift and Nicki Manaj show the world that there is no Bad Blood. Were they fighting? I must have slept through that one, but ok, seems they could make up long enough to perform together last night. I would venture to guess the whole thing was made up to sell some records. Amiright?
Since Nicki's not fighting with Taylor anymore, she decided to pick a fight with Miley Cyrus. When accepting her award last night for Best Hip-Hop-Video she ended her speech, throwing it back to Miley by saying "and now back to this bitch who had a lot to say about me in the press the other day." Again, relevance, records and dollars. You think the had a meeting before and staged it? I'd say that was the best "performance" of the night. I give her high marks on her dress, tho. I think she looks beautiful.
Ugggh, them again? And seated front and center last night. Question: Does Kim have a tailor? Because I have the name of someone and she could CLEARLY use one. The ill fitting garment does nothing for her except make her look sloppy. Anyway, her self absorbed husband decided to declare his run for the presidency in 2020 on stage. What the hell? If Donald Trump can run for President and lead the polls why not Kayne?
So not relevant anymore. Britney Spears presented an award last night and I know what all of you were thinking because I was too; washed up, tired and over. It's sad because it would seem that Britney finally has her life together. She's no dummy though. She reportedly made $30 million over the last two years for her Vegas show and just renegotiated a raise for her next run. Reports say she will take home close to $1 million a week. And although she has surpassed expectations selling tickets to her show, I'm not sure it's the MTV crowd that's buying her tickets. My money is on the Bingo junket playing crowd filling her seats.
Yup, she won a bunch of awards again..This lady has the Midas touch! And in a class move, she put to bed forever the Taylor/Kanye feud. Repeating his famous and controversial outburst at the VMA's a few years ago, she declared Kanye's career 'the greatest career of all time', then hugging it out with him for all to see. Class act, that Taylor.

Bye, Bye... Miss American Idol
It was announced today that the next season of American Idol, the 15th season, will be it's last. It is the end of an American institution, to be sure, but I think we can all agree it is time to put this one out of its misery. First debuted on Fox in June 2002, American Idol created a sensation from the moment the first episode aired.
American Idol once was a national obsession. Years ago, myself and several other bloggers would write re-caps and enjoy handicapping every minute of the Cinderella story played out in real time. I used to LOVE to watch Idol every week and root for my favorite talent to win. It was a family affair, as we would all gather together to enjoy the excitement of Idol. It was magic, watching everyday people become singing sensations each week. Thorough it's tenure, Idol has produced two bonafide recording stars; Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. Then a string of 11 almost stars, some more forgettable than others. American Idol introduced us to Simon Cowell, the celebrity judge we all love to fear. If Simon said something, one was hardpressed to forget it and his advice helped launch the careers of many aspiring stars.
The judges, they became like family. A cuckoo, crazy family with a stern father (Simon), a beautiful but dizzy mother (Paula), a groovy big brother (Randy), and the voice of reason. (Ryan) Then they got too famous...the judges almost became the focus more than the talent. There was fighting within producing staff...it was documented that the franchises marquee talent-Simon Cowell- wasn't happy and was looking elsewhere. Then Paula left and then Simon left and no matter who they replaced them with Idol was never the same without Simon.
Is that when Idol jumped the shark?
Possibly, but my guess is it jumped the shark some where in between Season 4 and Season 8. Too many talented folks elimated early-conspiracy theories abound-and America's favorite show never quite rebounded. The hand writing was on the wall, yet it soldiered on, banking on America's belief in the dream. They bled that franchise for every dollar it was worth and they weren't smart enough to stop the bleeding. They hired new celebrity judges-big names with big followings-they changed the format countless times, yet Idol never delivered the goods after Season 4. They never delivered another true American Idol.
In the end, we enjoyed it for what it was worth-but nobody like a guest who overstayed their welcome.
Bye bye American Idol. Your time has come.

I've Got The Music In Me
I have made it no secret in the seven years I have been writing this blog that I suck at music. There is even a category in the archives of The Daily Dandy that states just that, "I suck at music" with two posts to date. To say that is a bit overstated may be more accurate, but by calling myself out with the generalization I mean that I have never really been much of a music collector through the years. Even in my prime teen music listening years, I was happier listening to the radio than collecting albums. Then Apple and Steve Jobs changed the way the world listened to and purchased music, yet I still seemed content listening to my radio.
I listen to music all day. I listen to the radio on my way to work and all day in my store. At the store I listen to Pandora and can tailor my music tastes to suit the environment, but in my car I am at the mercy of the radio station of my choosing. Yes, I have an iPod and yes, I have a bit of music I have bought in these "iTunes" recent years. I even know what a playlist is but I never really had much of a need to create one. Really.
Well that all changed on Saturday night.
After a fab dinner with 5 of my favorite people, on the ride home in our Uber car, we got stuck in over an hour of unusually heavy traffic. One of my friends asked the driver if he had an AUX cord to which he obliged. She plugged in her phone and we listened to her playlist on her phone. I explained to her that I wasn't sure how all that "worked" with the phone and she explained it to me quickly.
A light went off.
Of course I knew how this worked! I had bought music sporadically here and there on my phone, but I never had really organized it or realized the power I held in the palm of my hand. I started organizing and setting my previously purchased music into playlists! "I don't suck at this!", I thought to myself and I immediately wanted more. I then downloaded the app Shazam and began purchasing songs I liked in the iTunes Store. When the traffic had ended and I was safely encsconsed at home I had already purchased 63 songs.
A monster has been created and I LOVE it! As of today I have purchased over 100 songs and find that during down times I am shuffling and organizing my music on my devices. It's beginning to get a bit pricey and I know the novelty will wear off soon, but for now I am making up for lost time! As a matter of fact as I type this I am listening to some of my favorite songs on my phone.
And this whole experience has helped me to realized that I have pretty good taste in music. Eclectic, yet classic and edgy at the same time and distinctly me. Music makes me happy and you know what?
I don't suck at music!!
In fact, I'm quite good, really. Who knew?

Cuz H's are EW!
I define myself in many ways; mother, wife, entrepreneur, and friend to name a few. But there is a part of me that lives on inside the woman that is all which I have described.
That part of me is still a 12 year old girl.
That's why I think this is so funny, brilliant, endearing and SPOT ON accurate!
It also makes me an even bigger Jimmy Fallon fan...like if that's even possible..like really.
This is the latest from the EW! franchise and I fricken love it.

Strut-ting His Stuff
Be still my heart...I do love me some Lenny Kravitz.
That hunky, gorgeous piece of eye candy has just dropped a new album called Strut. Playing to his rock side, Kravitz said this album literally wrote itself. Kravitz has been living a dream as of late, his acting career skyrocketing in the past few years. He landed a role in the Oscar winning movie Precious and then as Cenna in the Hunger Games and Catching Fire movies. He then played a key role in the award winning movie, Lee Daniels, The Butler. Yes, it's been a good couple of years for Lenny.
Kravitz says that while he was on set finishing up Catching Fire, he kept hearing music in his head that just wouldn't go away. He decided to pay attention to it rather than loose it and his latest album was hatched. A true instrumentalist, song writer he starts with guitars and drums first and adds what it needs along the way. Best known for his number one hit, "Fly Away", Lenny Kravitz has been a hit maker since he debuted in the early 90's.
I'm buying the album because I love his music and I'm a huge fan. Rumor has it the inside cover sleeve photo is worth the price of it alone.
This isn't it the one from the new album, but you get the idea here.
What was I saying?
Oh yeah...I love me some Lenny Kravitz. I wanna fly away..........

He's Bringing Sexy Back
While there I noticed a few things I thought interesting:
The crowd was eclectic! Lots of women and men in my age demo and lots of people in Frick's demo.
There were plenty of couples, which was interesting, to say the least. I would have thought it would have been more of a "chicks" thing, dripping with young women. Not the case at all.
Sexy was in the air. Beside the great show, we had an interesting show going on right in front of us. Three young, handsome guys and two girls in the row in front of us. You couldn't help but notice that they were feeling sexy. Very sexy. There was a lot of bumping and grinding going on and a lot of "tonsil hockey" and swapping of partners. So here we are trying to enjoy the concert, but the show in front of us was unavoidable. Being much older than the people in front of us, I tried to focus my attention on the stage but Frick and her friends were mesmerized by the side show. They were horrified and kept commenting on the logistics of what was taking place in the row before us. I guess I'm lucky I raised her right, and after the show the girls involved beat a hasty retreat. It was then that we asked the boys if they had decided which one of the two they would take home? "No matter," the boys replied. "We have a deal. Whoever scores tonight will no doubt share the wealth with all of us." What the hell?
Ok and yes he really did say that. I'm just grateful it wasn't Frick and her friends in that row.
Justin and Jay-Z put on a killer show and Justin played at least three instruments during his sets.I had no idea that the former Boy Bander was so talented. While Justin danced and sang, Jay-Z came out and rapped during his set, but he seem tired. Kind of like I was tired at that point. Then we googled his age and I immediately knew why. Jay-Z is in my age demo. Hell yes he's tired! We're old...compared to the others.
All in, it was a great night and something I truly enjoyed doing with my daughter. They superstars commented that this was the best crowd of the entire tour, which made the place erupt!
But, I bet they say that in all the city's they travel to.

Jammin' With Jimmy
Happy Friday peeps!
Since I'm Slow Jammin' the weekend with Jimmy, I thought I'd take the hottest jam of the summer and view it "Jimmy" style. His band The Roots is amazing and considering they are all using children's instruments this version still rocks!
Enjoy and have a great weekend bloggers and try not to blurr too many lines.

The 80's Child
If they say the heart of Rock and Roll is still beating, then this album is more than barely breathing.
80's mega band Huey Lewis and The News, today celebrate the 30th anniversary of their number one, award winning album, Sports.
Thirty years ago I was exactly the one who was falling for "The Power of Love", as I had posters of the band and clean cut, raspy voiced Huey Lewis adorning my adolescent bedroom walls. The affable Lewis, and his band mates didn't always feel that loving power, though. They didn't hit record gold until their sophomore album, Picture This with the mega hit- "Do You Believe In Love?" that fueled a 35 weeks run on the Billboard 200 Album Chart.
With the release of Sports in 1984, the band was fast becoming a household name and went multi-platinum with their four, Billboard Top Ten hits, "Heart and Soul", "I Want a new Drug", "The Heart of Rock and Roll" and "If This Is it". Following their ascent into fame, they then released their fourth album, a chart topping number one, Billboard 200 Album, "Fore!". That album produced five more top ten singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and it then went triple platinum. Suddenly it was very, "Hip to Be Square".
The band is back and embarking on a tour in celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Sports debut. Judging by this morning's appearance on Good Morning America, the boy has still got it, the band is still rockin' and still delivering that special Huey Lewis sound.
So, relax Huey, no need to let you know, "If This Is It", someone would have told you a long time ago.

Opening Up Pandora's Box
Oh, I know I'm gonna get a ton of flack from Bama and Heff today, but I don't care. I'll ask them to reserve judgement and please know that everybody is different and has different tastes in music.
Sat night, I'm out with some high school friends having fun. We are at one of our friend's bar for a mini reunion type get together. After hours we are lucky enough to have the joint to ourselves, and someone puts their iPhone in the music system and puts on Pandora.
The requests start pouring in. Since the girls were in control of the music, "Donna Summer Radio" was added to Pandora and the party immediately started. We heard disco hits that brought us back to our carefree days of our high school youth. It was like a karaoke parade of music we hadn't heard in years. Things might have gotten a little "Coyote Ugly", and ketchup bottles were center stage as our stars were shining bright. Haven't had that much fun in a long time.
And just so you know guys, there was also ZZ Top, The Monkees, Bon Jovi and Judas Priest playing on up in there too!! I even added a few to my personal playlist. Never know when you might need a Donna Summer song to get you through a tough workout.
The music was great, but the time spent with old friends? It was priceless.

Rock For All Ages
Wow.
Right, they didn't reinvent the wheel here, but I sure had a good time. So shoot me.
Rock of Ages was a two hour long rock and roll anthem to my youth. I loved it because I didn't have to think about it too hard. I just had to sit back and be entertained. Beside the fact that I could name all the bands and sing along to virtually every jukebox song that was played out in musical form on the screen, the cast of Hollywood heavies made it an even more enjoyable rock and roll adventure. Oh I know, Rock of Ages was panned by the critics and it opened to minimal box office success, but I would venture to guess that this one will grow some legs and spark new life on DVD.
For me, it was two things; the music, oh the beautiful music, and the cast. Let's start with my favorites:
- Paul Giamatti. The guy is an anomaly by Hollywood standards, but he has truly perfected the "slime ball, scum bag" role to an art form. He's so despicable and disgusting (that heinous ponytail, ewww) that I hate to love him and love him I do. My visceral response to his work only leads me to believe the truth and the truth is that Giamatti is genius.
- Alec Baldwin. Hello? Is there any comedic role this guy can't turn into gold? As an over the hill rocker who stayed too long at the party, Bourbon Room owner Dennis Dupree, Baldwin and his loyal side man Lonnie (Russell Brand) gave one of the movie's comedic high points with REO Speedwagon's "Can't Fight this Feeling".
- Russell Brand? He just played himself, with a spot on makeover of a hair band groupie, which is why it was no stretch. His warm and fuzzy Lonny is the emotional anchor that binds this story together and serves as the comic relief.
- Then there's Tom Cruise as Stacee Jaxx, a resurrected Axl Rose type of rock God. Cruise nailed it and for me, the guy plays this role so dark and so sexy that I was left almost searching the iTunes store for Arsenal/Stacee Jaxx songs. It's such a departure for this Hollywood Marquee player, that I once again am amazed by Cruise and his brilliance when he throws something different at me. See: Tropic Thunder
The rest of the cast rounds it out quite nicely. While I enjoyed the performances of Julianne Hough and a somewhat unknown Diego Boneta, and Malin Ackerman and Catherine Zeta Jones, this one belonged to the big boys.
And the music.
The climactic finale, with the rock and roll anthem of today, Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" was predictable but nonetheless enjoyable. It somehow managed to sound fresh and uplifting, but for me it was Cruise who made it new.
Again, I'm just a sucker for a Rock and Roll story for all ages. So shoot me.

Blow Me One Last Kiss.
Dang, she's hot.
Seriously, I was watching her perform on the Today Show this morning and I was just thinking about how sexy and hot Pink is. She's hot in so many ways than being just hot too.
I mean first, she's a Rock Star. Crazy talented, edgy and just crazy-f-ed up enough to produce some real genius. Pink rocks it hard and from her music you get the feeling that in her short 33 years on this planet she's lived a lot of life. She doesn't lip sync her live performances because she changes up her spot on raspy vocals with some amazing harmonies which are unique to each show. Her songs usually have her trademark profanities laced within the lyrics but Pink gladly deletes them for more viewer friendly venues like Rockefeller Plaza. All signs that the once hard-core rocker has softened.
Now she's a mom. And clear, sober and happy are the words Pink uses to describe her life today. Reunited with her husband Corey Hart after a brief separation, she's got a beautiful little girl and she's just released a new album that drops today entitled, "The Truth About Love."
Then there's the whole 'she doesn't even know she's beautiful' thing. Pink, the same girl that sang, "Tired of being compared to damn Britney Spears/ She's so pretty. That just ain't me." in her hit "Don't Let Me Get Me", just signed a contract with Cover Girl. Not pretty? She's now a Cover Girl spokesmodel.Take that Britney Spears.
I just love her spirit. She's sexy, beautiful, young, rich, and taking the world by storm once again. If the secret to success in the industry is reinvention (see Madonna) Pink has proved a solid player by just being good.... and true to herself. Pink always "Get's the Party Started" leaving us to "Raise our Glass" and when it's all said and done she reminds us that no one, least of all her, is."F*****ng Perfect".

Cougar Or Kitten?
Is it wrong for a 22 year old to be in a romantic relationship with an 18 year old? Think about that for a moment.
Country music sweetheart Taylor Swift is 22 years old and already a major music and Hollywood player. Flushed with success and cash, in an industry that holds all the major cards, Miss Taylor got the keys to the executive washroom a long time ago. Taylor has, since the age of 19, been succeeding at a very grown up game.
Then there's Conor Kennedy. Conor, the son of Robert Kennedy Jr. and the late Mary Kennedy, is 18 years old. Handsome and privileged. Conor is a Kennedy. He's also the grandson of RFK which puts him in Kennedy bloodlines, number two or three on the impressive scale. Conor is certainly no slouch in the fame game and one may argue that these two are on equal ground when it comes to pedigree. He's also an heir to the Kennedy fortune. If the Kennedy fortune is not a myth, Conor should have no problem keeping up with the Swifts.
So if she's 22 and he's 18, why is it that I can't wrap my brain around this one?
It just seems wrong, yet it shouldn't. I mean a four year age difference is no big deal. Really, they are both kids in my eyes, but I know the difference between an 18 year old and a 22 year old is far more than a mere 4 years. I have an 18 year old in my house, (18 years old TODAY. Happy BDay Frick!) and I know exactly what she's up to. I can tell you unequivocally that she's not taking meetings with music moguls or taking to her money managers about her investments, or buying $4.9 million dollar, Hyannisport, waterfront mansions to be close to her new boyfriend. No, she's giggling with her girlfriends and doing things that I don't want to know about and getting ready for college.
Conor is still in high school, as he has one more year left at Deerfield Academy, and no matter who he is, he's not doing the same things that 22 year old Taylor is doing. Of that, I have got to be certain.
So maybe it's a harmless summer crush. Maybe not. Rumors abound, buying a $4.9 million dollar piece of property, just to be close to your man, er um, boy, seems like more than a crush. And somehow, Taylor seems the tragic figure in all this. Like the handwriting is scratched in neon on the wall.
This cougar just may be the one who gets bitten.

Super Heavy Subject Matter

I read about this "Dream Team" new band today made up of an eclectic group of performers, some legendary, some not. They call themselves "Super Heavy", and I think they just may be super cool.
For the past two years, Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Dave Stewart, Damien Marley, and AR Rahman, have been working on a secret album that drops this week. Super Heavy's debut album is said to be a "fusion" of unexpected musical styles from "reggae, to ballads to Indian songs in Urdu". With Jagger being draw enough for me, I'm curious to listen to their sound considering this unique collaboration of these artists.
Said to be Dave Stewart's brainchild, who got the inspiration from listening to different sound systems in his home all at once. He talked to friend Jagger and brain stormed how they could make a fusion of sounds. After six months of making calls, Stone, Marley, Rahman, Stuart and Jagger started banging it out in the studio. Admittedly not knowing "what the hell they were doing at first", Stuart explains that these jam sessions with the artists each contributing something of their own, slowly worked their way into songs.
An All Star Band? An interesting concept at best. But whether or not this new grouping actually touches and inspires fans is another thing completely.
So you be the judge. Check out the website at SuperHeavy.com
And check out their first single, Miracle Worker:And Jagger still got his moves....

Flashback Friday
Hey Bloggers! Happy Friday. I'm dedicating this post to my blogger buddies Beckeye and Dr Kenneth Noisewater, Heff and Bama Trav and all you other music aficionado's.
Me? I suck at music, but a song came on the radio the other day that brought me back to a wonderful time in my life. The Monkees were a TV phenom boy band back in the day and I used to watch them with stars in my eyes. The beloved band, The Monkees, were comprised of heart throbs and awkward hippy teens who cranked out a groovy sound for a comedy TV show aimed at teens. I was their target demographic and I took the bait hook, line and sinker.
Funny, the group endured all kinds of criticism because the band was formed around a TV show. Some say they lacked the strengths of a band that had been jammin together for a while and dubbed them a fraud. But you can't deny the songs they produced that still stand today.
So I chose three of my Monkees favorites and lets vote on the quintessential song that represent them. I'll tell you later which one is my favorite.
Have a Pleasant Valley Weekend Bloggers.

It's Britney, Bi*ch
Why am I writing about Britney today? Because today her new album Femme Fatale drops and because she was all over my beloved Good Morning America. I actually worked out this morning with Britney. I feel like I really want to hate her, but for some reason I can't. She has managed to stay relevant and continues to keep her hold in our culture. She's made big mistakes in the public eye and lived to tell about them. I watched her performance this morning and I have to admit, her new single, "Hold It Against Me" has some serious "sticking in your head" power. I keep waiting for her to bomb big time, but she hasn't. And I also have to admit at 29 years old, and selling over 100 million albums to date, the girl is a bona fide pop icon.
Say what you will about her. She of the gargantuan mental melt down in front of the world, this Phoenix emerged from the ashes more powerful and popular than ever. You just have to respect that. You may not respect the choices she has made in her personal life, but you can't deny that her mom and dad stepped in and saved her life and that her two little boys still have their mama. Whatever that is worth.
This Britney is a little slower and not as crisp on stage, but she still rocks and the people love her. Suffice it to say that she's not going anywhere soon. She may not be the classiest pop star nor the brightest pop star on the block, but she's a draw and she still sells. I'm also sure that some of her new album will migrate it's way onto my ipod.
Britney and I were born on the same day, so in a way we are kindred spirits from "the day of larger than life" (our birthday December 2). And quietly I'll be rooting for her, because I love a good story of triumph and hers is one for the record books. That's right, It's Britney, Bitch, and she's back.

A Dandy Anthem
Music tends to speak to my soul. I have always danced to the beat of my own drummer, so when I heard a little ditty recent it seemed to speak directly to me, and that doesn't happen very often. I quickly decided that this was my new "anthem", a song I could be proud to call my own.
After all, "you're not the boss of me" would probably run through the movie trailer track of my life, as it is one of my favorite responses to any inquiry I'm not particularly fond of. So if there is a sound track to accompany the movie of one's life, this song would most certainly run through the opening credits.
Happy weekend bloggers! Don't let anyone be the boss of you this weekend.

Last Play At Shea
So I'm riding in my car this morning to a Zumba class, that didn't happen, (a whole other story) listening to Howard Stern. He's interviewing this guy and they're talking about Paul McCartney and the Beatles. While I'm listening to the interview, I'm trying to figure out who this guy is that Howard is interviewing. He sounded much like a kid from Long Island, and at times a bit humble. Howard was asking him what it was like to be a rock star and why he closed each concert with, "Don't take any crap from anyone." He replied it stemmed from his childhood and how he was pushed around as a kid and he kept referring to himself as Willie. Willie got picked on because he played the piano and had his books knocked out of his hands and such. I'm thinking it's Billy Joel, but then I decided no. The piano man could never be a Willie.Howard asked him about the people who sang at his concert; this last concert at Shea. Artists like John Mayer, Steven Tyler, Garth Brooks, and Sir Paul. Stern went on to call this man insecure, because he admitted to not knowing exactly who would show up at his concert and why they would. Willie told the story of how McCartney called him the day before the show, and he didn't know who it was at first, to tell him that he didn't think he would be able to make it. Something about a flight and not being able to get into town in time. Willie, ecstatic that Sir Paul even considered making it, said he went on stage content that Paul McCartney had almost made it. He was floored when the legendary Beatle, indeed, showed at Shea to close out the show. The New York Times is quoted as saying about Joel when McCartney came on stage,
"The sold out crowd of 55,000 people let out an ear splitting roar as Mr McCartney sang the Beatles, "I Saw Her Standing There. Mr Joel, playing back-up fitting his reputation as a self-deprecating rock star, looking on from his piano as if he were just a fan himself."
It was confirmed that my suspicions that Willie was Billy Joel, when Howard asked him what his favorites of his music were and he replied, "New York State of Mind, Vienna, Summer Highland Falls, to name a few. The entire process was filmed for his documentary that opens tomorrow called, "Last Play at Shea".
I'm thinking that's a documentary I would like to see in the theaters and that that interview alone was worth my $23.00 subscription to Sirius Radio.

Little Fanilow
I was in Paris last fall with two of my bestest friends in the world. We were walking on the streets in the great City of Lights on a gorgeous day, singing. The conversation somehow turned to Barry Manilow. (I think we were singing Copacabana) My girlfriend told me that die hard Manilow fans called themselves "Fanilow's".
I nearly split a gut laughing.
Yesterday she sent this to me and I think I'm in love.
This kid's definitely got a career ahead of him....if he can loose the little sister.
