Carny Knowledge

I had the worst dream last night about Carnies. It was pretty scary because I was lost, completely petrified by the freaks, and I couldn't find my kids. And make no mistake, there were tons of freaks! It seemed every where I turned there was one freak worse than the last one, laughing at me, tormenting me. I think I know how Alice felt when she fell down that rabbit hole.

Even stranger was throughout my dream, Thin Lizzy's, "The Boys Are Back In Town" was the running soundtrack and it seemed to be getting louder and louder, the more anxious I got. Somehow I lost my kids. We were all on go-karts, having a great time and when the ride was over my kids were nowhere to be found. Complete panic ensued, and I searched for what seemed like an eternity for them, confronted by one dirty, toothless, carnie freak after another and I knew I couldn't, and most certianly wouldn't leave without them. I woke before I found them, relieved to be safe at home.

Horrible.

What does this dream mean? This morning I did a little research on dreams about carnivals.

This is from the Predictions Dream Dictionary:

As settings for dreams, these are ambiguous places. It seems as though amusement parks often include elements that we consider to be the best and worst in life.

Carnivals also include a very wonderful or frightening collection of personalities. These personalities may intimidate us at times.

Sometimes the fright comes from a figure we love, such as a parent who doesn't really enjoy the carnival, but endures it for the children.

Eventually, the illusion of the idyllic family outing is transformed to an angry scene. Who are you with in the carnival and how do you experience the time there?

In what way are the rides metaphors for your life? In other words, how is your life like a rollercoaster, merry-go-round, or other central feature of the park?

The more I think about it the less I want to know.
Is it possible that this mom is having a hard time with the ducklings growing up?
Maybe I see the "carnies" as a metaphor for what is cruel in the world and my uncertianty about letting go. Who the hell knows why we dream what we dream, but I do know this:

This is one ride that I want to get the hell off of.

First of all, the title of this story is absolutely perfect. Kudos for that. Carnies are the creepiest people on earth, with the lone possible exception of the night maintenance Walmart crew, but I'm operating under the assumption that those guys are just carnies trying to make some cash on the side to support their drug and illicit pornography habits.

Where the hell was I?

Oh yeah, excellent post, Candy. I'm now creeped out for the day.

I love good dreams, and hate bad dreams which can stay with me all day..... but I think the mind truly never shuts off and at night, it has time to get into the deep part of our brains.

Thin Lizzy would actually make a perfect sound track.

I think you probably hit the nail right on the head with your assessment of the meaning behind the dream. But what a creepy freakin way for your subconscious to clue you in!

My diagnosis? You need to drink more Chardonnay in the evening. Chardonnay takes care of both boogymen and bad dreams. I'm such a believer, I imbibe nightly.

What does your dream mean? I think it means you need a stronger sleep aid!

And that's some ghastly carnie photo. I guess it is true, pet's do look like their owners.

As long as you didn't have sex with any of the carnies in your dream, I think you're just fine.

No, no ... Your dream breaks down this way. You're moving to California, driving to LA to have a secret affair with Guv Ahnold and then, after a while, you'll take your love child and move to Alaska where you'll be a bush pilot and on stormy day will rescue a gaggle of lost fisherman, one who will be Mark Cuban and, with his reward money, will fund your candidacy for governor of Alaska. You will stomp Sara Palin and then retire to the governor's double wide trailer which is parked next to the place where the traveling carnies go in the summer. You will occasionally have them over for moose and berry pie while sitting on the porch looking at Russia with made in China binoculars.

Well I have to say that I am not real pleased with this post as I come from a long line of carnival workers. These people work hard for little pay to entertain people like ....

Ok, I'm just kidding.

candy - I thought I passed you there, I was yelling at you and you seemed kinda distant and concerned. Oh well, see you at the next carnival.

I'm very nearly always naked at some point in my dreams... I know it's all about insecurity... tell me something I don't know

I dreamed I was a merry go round that screamed "ride me! ride me!"

No I didn't.

That's a pretty awesome dream, even if it was scary. TBABIT is a good one but their version of Whiskey In The Jar rules.
