Odds On How Long This Guy Will Be Out Of Work

Some people are just downright brilliant. It's either brilliance or pure chutzpah, but any way you look at it, this guy has it all going for him. His name is Lawson Clarke and he was recently laid off from his job at Arnold Worldwide, a Boston based ad agency in March of this year. Clarke has launched an online resume, http://www.malecopywriter.com/ to showcase his portfolio of digital, TV and print work to potential employers.

In a takeoff of the the famously parodied Burt Reynolds centerfold spread in Cosmo Magazine decades ago, Clarke cleverly places an old-school TV in the perfect spot for viewing his "stuff". The Boston Herald reports 37 year-old Clarke said, "Had I known that taking off my clothes would get this much attention, I would have been nude years ago."
After getting a positive write up in Monday's trade mag, AdvertisingAge, Clarke reports his site received over 140,000 hits as of yesterday with no offers of employment yet, although he has been getting plenty of e-mails. One chairman of a large New York ad agency asked him, "Why are you unemployed? Do you have a personality disorder?"

The thing about this guy's site is that it's really unique and definitely entertaining. Ever the curious one, I checked it out after reading about it in the paper this morning, and found myself spending far more time perusing the site than I had anticipated. I am always in awe of creative ingenuity and talent. Clarke says that he saw the handwriting on the wall when the recession hit and began working on the site before he was laid off. He reports it took two months to grow the cheesy moustache for the photo and that the chest hair is all his.

So I wonder, with all the great press and a resume like that, what odds would Vegas place on how long this guy will be out of work?

I wonder if Hollywood's reluctance to create new comedy TV shows has created an abundance of copywriters in the ad industry. There was a time that a lot of comedy writers came from the advertising world. With fewer comedies on TV, there are fewer jobs for writers in TV. Thus forcing writers to stay in advertising to pay the bills.
But you know how the economy is, it's either great or awful. Very little in between. Right now it's awful. Everybody is going to lose their job. But when it rebounds and it will, the economy will be great and everybody who wants a job will have one.

I heard on NPR last night that Dom DeLuise did this once on Carson and Burt Reynolds sent him a personal note the next day asking him to stop picking on him. That was how they met and they were fast friends from that point forward.

That's pretty awesome. Maybe I should create a website and put semi-nude pics of myself all over it. I'm sure people would start offering me copywriting jobs left and right if I promised to put my clothes back on.

And yeah, that guy is brilliant! If my hubby ever cannot find a job, I'll strip his ass naked and make a site too! I think I could pass him off as a look alike for Tim McGraw. He can't sing but I'll Milli Vanilli some Indian Outlaw on that sucker & beg a job for him as a stripper!

I'm thinking he'll get something out of this. You gotta give it to him for the originality.

I think if he'd spent more time focusing on his former job and less time developing his website, he might not be seeking employment right now.

Nudity sells that's for sure.

I think I'll slip a naked pic into my resume and apply for a CEO position somewhere.

Hello, there's a recession going on here people! Haven't you noticed how many people are out of work or are going to be very shortly? Michigan got Federal Stimulus money and the State is dropping all or a goodly portion of the last 1/3 it owes to the cities. Any idea what THAT is going to do local government and schools?

Ok, enough ranting. I'm not going to his website but that's only because I'm afraid Lawson might draw me in with his *eyes*. Yeah.

He won't be out of work long. Really, though, for anyone to compete in Marketing nowadays, particularly good ad agencies, they have to be on this level.
