The Master Of Macabre Disguise

Sometimes I find it hard to believe that the gorgeous creature above, Johnny Depp, can effortlessly morph himself into the most interesting of characters so masterfully that he makes you forget how gorgeous he is. His character creations are legendary, beginning with Edward Sissorhands right through to The Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland.

Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka, Sweeny Todd, no one can quite do just what Johnny does which is make the mundane become intriguing and macabre.

But it's his latest creation that's got me all a flutter, and here's the thing, I didn't even know I liked the guy! With this newest collaboration with Tim Butrton, "Dark Shadows" Johnny Depp has me intrigued and asking myself, "Who is this guy?"

Maybe it's because I remember the Dark Shadows TV shows from some where in my youth, and to see Johnny as Barnabus Collins not only took me back to my childhood, it intrigued the HELL out of me. Again, "who is this guy?"

I think I love him.

Not only is Johnny Depp the man a fine chunk of man candy, but his characters tend to incite a feeling from deep inside that is both exciting and exhilarating. If Johnny is in character, it's going to be worth the price of the ticket. And if it's been done right, "Dark Shadows" out May 11th will be a great ride.

Love him or hate him, you can't deny his talent. He is truly a Master of his art.

WTF? Friday

Hey Bloggity Bloggers!

TGIF!!! and since it's Friday, I think it time for another rousting rendition of WTF? Friday courtesy of our lovely friends from WalMart. You gotta wonder, what were they thinking?

Super Size Me 2? Something tells me that this guy is not a Hollywood documentary film maker. People of WalMart dubbed it "McHoarding".  I think it's just gross. Psychologically there has to be some sort of warped sense of pride at the massive collection. Don't you think?

Hee hee..This one is wrong on so many levels, but I can't help but think he's cute. Look at his little heels and his Coach bag...even if he is wearing his granddaughter's shorts.

OK, so at first I thought, a lady goes to WalMart with her disposable pedicure thongs on. Ridiculous, yes, but no big deal. Upon further inspection, I realized that she is wearing Always Menstrual Pads on her feet. Adhesive side up. And she just went shopping at WalMart. I don't know who's a bigger fool?

Her for walking around Wally World like that or me for thinking for a split second that this is genius.

Talk about inviting trouble...

Sister here is used to having conversations with the Po Po. She's just not used to having them in WalMart. What are the odds she met him outside after his shift for a "date"?

Heff, this one's for you. I nearly had to scratch my eyes out after looking at this one. If it took me 7 minutes to figure out that she is wearing leggings, imagine what the other shoppers thought? Heffy, do I even need to ask???

And finally, this lady is shakin' her way to better upper arm tone all WHILE DRIVING.

Which all begs the question..WTF?

Have a good weekend Bloggers, and please try to exercise good judgement..(no pun intended)

I Love Me A Nice, Big SANG-a-wich..

I'm loving the changes I've made my in diet, because it keeps me fit and helps me to stay on track and stay in my jeans. Being sugar-free isn't easy, but I've come to get used to the foods I can and can't eat. I get to eat whatever want (EXCEPT sugar) two meals a week, and I usually end up splurging on dinner foods. One of the things I miss is having a sandwich. I miss the good old, wholesome yumminess of having a big old sandwich.

I was watching Rachel Ray's show yesterday and I learned that April is National Grilled Cheese Month. Really? Who decides this stuff? Anyway, this just served to get my sandwich mojo flowing and I decided that tonight would be National Grilled Cheese Night in The Daily Dandy household.

Rachel had a "Grilled Cheese Sammie Smackdown" and she made 3 types of delectable, yummy, gooey grilled cheese goodness. Today I'm sharing the recipe for the one that lit my taste buds ablaze and made me get all giddy with the anticipation of a Grilled Cheese dinner night!

Grilled Deviled Ham and Cheese

Ingredients

  • For the Deviled Ham:
  • 1/2 pound prosciutto cotto, coarsely chopped
  • 1 small rib celery from heart, coarsely chopped
  • 1 Fresno chili pepper, coarsely chopped
  • 1/2 small red onion, coarsely chopped
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons flat-leaf parsley tops, a small handful
  • 1 large clove garlic, grated or pasted
  • 3 tablespoons yellow mustard, such as French’s
  • 2 round tablespoons pickle relish
  • 2 teaspoons hot sauce, such as Frank’s Red Hot
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce, such as Lea and Perrin’s
  • Black pepper

  • Good quality salted butter, melted
  • 8 hand-sliced slices good quality white bread, cut 1/2-inch thick
  • 8 deli slices Swiss cheese, such as Jarlesberg
  • 8 deli slices yellow cheddar cheese

Preparation

For the deviled ham, pulse-process ingredients in food processor into almost-smooth, very finely chopped spread.
Liberally brush 1 side of 8 slices of bread for 4 sandwiches with the melted butter.
Build sandwiches: bread with the butter side facing down, 2 slices Swiss cheese, some deviled ham, 2 slices cheddar cheese, and another slice of bread with the buttered side out.
Grill sandwiches over medium heat on nonstick griddle pan until cheese is melted and they’re deeply golden.

All 3 of Rachel Ray's Grilled Cheese recipes can be found HERE.
And I'm just warning you...you may be thinking about you favorite "sang-a -wich" all day long.

Witty Wednesday

One evening a Husband, thinking he was being funny, said to his wife, 'Perhaps we should start washing your clothes in 'Slim Fast'. Maybe it would take a few inches off of your butt!'

His wife was not amused, and decided that she simply couldn't let such a comment go unrewarded.

The next morning the husband took a pair of underwear out of his drawer. 'What the Hell is this?' he said to himself as a little 'dust' cloud appeared when he shook them out.

'April', he hollered into the bathroom, 'Why did you put Talcum Powder in my underwear?'

She replied with a snicker, 'It's not talcum powder; it's 'Miracle Grow'!!!!!

"When The Solution Is Simple, God Is Answering," Albert Einstein

Sometimes its hard for me to believe that I have a child going off to college because I still have moments of uncertainty that make me want to crawl into the fetal position and stay there. You see, that's me right now, the little white guy above and I need to come to a decision about a very important part of my life. I need to choose one of those paths and hope to God it's the right one.

What do you do, when you are faced with a tough decision? How do you handle it? I do the whole pros and cons thing. I'm an old school, pen and paper kind of girl. I literally write out the pros and cons of a situation and try to trigger that "a-ha" moment which will bring me the answer that I have been seeking. It doesn't always work, but I usually end up learning something.

Making tough decisions can be character building, but it sucks while you are going through the process, and I am going through the process right now. It calls for maturity and critical thinking, none of witch come easily when it's an important decision. My dad always taught me to remove the emotion from the equation and try to look at it from a purely non emotional view point. That's pretty hard to do when the decision you make determines the fate of something you care so deeply about.

I am the most decisive person I know when it comes to frivolous decisions. I can look at a pair of shoes, a lip gloss, eye shadow or handbag and the decision to pair this with that and that with this comes instantly. Never one to waver over fashion choices, I may ask for help occasionally, but I have an innate sense of what is right immediately. Same goes for when the decision has to do with one of my children. Mother's intuition is always there for me when it come to guiding my kids through tough times in life.It may not always be "right", but it is always right for us. So why is it that I can't make an all important life decision for myself instantly?

Maybe this answer is not meant to come instantly. Maybe the lesson is in the process and finding the answer   is the cherry on the sundae. I sure hope so, because right now I'm still up there looking out over the paths. And I'm thinking about that fetal position thing....

I'm Off Like A Prom Dress....

Happy Friday bloggers!

It's the kickoff to vacation week here in the burbs and we are off again! We all headed to Gotham City, or New York as it's known, because this weekend is for accepted students at NYU. Frick is pumped and Frack is pissed. (he'd rather be golfing in Florida) The only request he had was to go see "Spiderman Turn Off The Dark" on Broadway, to which we all agreed, so he can't be that pissed.

So that means that The Daily Dandy will be on hiatus from today, Friday, April 13, 2012 and will return on Thursday, April 19, 2012.

I'm pumped too. I'm going to see the Statue of Liberty because I've never seen it up close. Yup, and I wanna go eat at Eataly, and I want to go to St. Patricks, (maybe Sunday Mass?) and Saks Fifth Avenue and of course, Bergdorff's and Barneys. I've just got to go to Dylan's Candy Bar, don't I?

My bestest friend in the world lives in NYC, so I'll be seeing lots of her and I have another close friend there and then theres THE MAD TEXTER!! Corey James, I'm coming for you. I want to meet you one day at The Evolution Store in SoHo. My inner Goddess of The Skull LOVES it there, and I must buy myself a souvenir. (it's also directly across the street from the Kardashian's Dash store, so we can go over there and have a field day ripping them).

Needless to say I'm excited.

Have a great week bloggers, I'll see you on the flip side and take a moment to enjoy some city life!

Warts And All

There was a time, back when I was in junior high school, when I didn't always feel as confident as I do now. I know, it's hard to believe judging by the size of my ego as an adult, but back then I was bullied. My experiences during those years definitely served to shape me into who I am today and despite the pain, I find myself grateful for having endured it. Yes, I am somewhat grateful for having been bullied.

It was 7th grade and in our school district all of the elementary schools in the town converged together for 7th and 8th grade in one building. It was an exciting time to be a middle schooler, as lots of new fresh faced Tweens, awkward and bright eyed, met for the first time in the halls of our "junior high". It was a definitely a time of "firsts". It was the first time we had used lockers, the first time we didn't have to march single file in a line in the hallway between classes and the first time the new boys and girls got to check each other out.

In junior high, we had homeroom, which was assigned alphabetically and somehow lies at the crux of this story. I don't remember exactly what happened, but a boy in my home room, one I did not know, decided I would be his victim. Looking back, I might have responded to his first interaction with me flippantly, and he decided that my punishment would be to hand pick me for his special brand of torture.

I remember in those first few days hearing the name echoing in the hallways. I wasn't quite sure what it meant, or who it was meant for but it was undoubtedly a nasty, ugly name and it's sole purpose was to demean and punish its recipient. I soon figured out that I was the beneficiary of this horrible name because it started to follow me wherever I went. At first, the boys were having a field day using my new moniker against me, and I was quickly ostracized by the "coolies" in my peer group. But I was ok because I was the last of five in an entire family of "coolies", which made me a coolie by default. Or so I thought.

I had the "coolie" girls for friends, as we were just beginning to form the social groups that would withstand our high school careers. Soon the coolie girls began to make excuses and go to great lengths to lie to me about parties and play dates. I remember being invited to a friend's house with about 5 other coolies after school. We were jumping on her trampoline and having fun when the head coolie came out and made an announcement, "I have to go to gymnastics class, so everybody has to leave now."

We all looked at each other, and since I was the only one to ride my bike, I rose to leave. Feeling suspicious, I asked, "How is everybody else getting home?" I was told that her big sister would be driving everybody else home, pronto. They even took the ruse as far as to march out to the driveway, where my bike was parked, and pile all five coolies into the car. Waving goodbye, I drove away, but the feeling that I was being duped nagged at my psyche. I traveled a bit further down the road and I turned to look back, thereby confirming my suspicions. I caught all of them getting out of the car and going back into the house.

I continued on my bike ride home, tears stinging my eyes against the cool afternoon breeze, and as I turned to corner I spied two coolie boys from my grade, riding their bikes up the same street approaching me. The pending doom I felt at that moment was instantly lifted when they both waved enthusiastically and called me by my proper name. Instantly I had been vindicated and I felt a sense of triumph, albeit only briefly. Once we passed each other the smiles faded and I was reminded that I was not entitled to feel social grace of any kind. They screamed out my horrible name and laughed as they continued on.

I have thousands of stories like that one, most of which comprise my middle school years. My own brother was ashamed of me and if he really wanted to hurt me, he would pull out the name to sink the knife deeper into the wound. By the grace of God I survived and somewhere along the way, during the summer of my entrance into high school, the swan blossomed. I got my braces off, I had a great summer camp experience that helped to bolster my self esteem and I got noticed once I entered high school.

I left the name behind back in middle school and I never heard it again. I say I am grateful because I'm not sure I would be who I am today without that experience. It made me a better person. It taught me compassion and it made me see people through different eyes. In high school I was lucky because my bullying experience allowed me to navigate my way through every social group effectively. I was accepted for who I am because I had at one time been where no man had wanted to go and I survived.

Those coolie girls, the ones who were indifferent to my pain in middle school? I still call them my friends today and the one who pulled the ruse to get rid of me is today part of my inner circle. Crazy? Maybe, but what I learned through it all was that people make mistakes. I can't control other people's decisions, good or bad. We all survived high school and they have since made restitution for their sins, because they might have won the battle, but I won the war. I am the lucky one because they gave me a gift.

I am so grateful that it didn't turn me to a dark place that I may have never came back from and grateful that I was strong enough to withstand what I was handed. But I am most grateful for the effect it had on me as a human being. If I could say one thing to anyone who is experiencing bullying today it would be...hold on...the message will be revealed and you too will have your redeeming swan moment. And somewhere, some how, there is a reason you have been chosen to receive this message. I pray for you to be be a lucky one, too and accept yourself for who you are. Warts and all.

Pop Poop

This special edition of Pop Poop has been brought to you today by my utter disdain for what I once considered the best show on television. Let's start there, shall we?

GLee- You suck. I'm sorry, but I'm thinking about breaking up with you. What the helll? Last night's episode sucked so bad maybe I'll make next Tuesday night "Viewer Skip Day." Their were two positives on the night for me overall:

1. The whole Quinn in a wheelchair thing was a powerful message about the dangers of texting and driving.

2. Matt Bomer (who is he?) played Coop, Blaine's famous actor brother. Damn, if there isn't something about that guy. He's sexy and handsome and although he played a narcissistic B-list actor, the entire glee club was mesmerized by him.

Sorry Glee, even the music was sub par last night. You don't even get an entire post dedicated to you until you step up your game.

Dancing With the Stars-Plagued recently by serious medical issues, will they cancel America's guiltiest pleasure because of the physical dangers?

Melissa Gilbert was rushed to the hospital after Monday night's dance where she banged her head during her performance and suffered a mild concussion and whiplash. Maria Menounos suffered two broken ribs and foot injuries during her rehearsals. She reportedly wears two electrodes attached to her feet to stimulate her bones while she dances.

I realized today that even though I do NOT watch this show, I know everything that happens on Dancing With The Stars because I watch Good Morning America every morning. In fact, I know a lot about ABC/Disney because the show shamelessly promotes all of their ABC prime time programming during GMA.

Moe, Larry and Curley-I don't know if some of The Daily Dandy's younger, hipster readers remember the Three Stooges, but I definitely do. My brothers were OBSESSED with them and we spent some wonderful bonding times together laughing and watching the antics of the Howard brothers. They then would beat the crap out of me, using the slap stick techniques they had just learned watching the Stooges. Good times...
The Farrelly Brothers, "The Three Stooges" drops Friday and I'm dying to see this one. Especially since the Farelly's directed it. I expect to be highly entertained.

I heard an interview a while back with Tom Bergeron (yeah, the guy from Dancing with the Stars)He grew up in Boston and when he was in high school he had a radio show that made him somewhat of a local celeb. We watched the Stooges locally on TV-38 and as a fan, he somehow landed a huge interview with Moe Howard, via telephone. Howard was, at the time, in the December of his life and career and living in a resting home. Bergeron claims Howard still had a keen mind and was a wonderful interview. Their exchange gave Bergeron a resume piece that got him noticed, and it made Howard a friend who took a liking to the kid. Bergeron continued his relationship with Howard up until his death, and interviewed him several times.

The Three Stooges is a throwback to a time gone by. They were unique comedians with their own brand of physical comedy who came straight from vaudveille. How many of you remember vaudveille?

Does this mean I'm old????

Magic Bird

Back in 1984, I was a bright eyed college freshman who arrived to my first day at my freshman dormitory and met the girl who would be my college roommate. I was as excited as I had ever been. My mom had planned my dormitory supplies well. I had new bedding, flashy new pillows, coordinating blankets and sheets, tons of toiletries (it is me, after all) new clothes and big dreams. My roommate and I, shook hands, met each others families, then said our goodbyes to them and immediately got busy setting up shop on our own "side of the room."

For me that was a bed, a bureau, some shelves, and a desk. My mom and I had picked out together almost everything, except for the wall art. That was my job alone, and I could only imagine what my roommate thought when the first thing I did was hang two enormous posters, side by side, over my bed. One poster was of Larry Bird and the other was of Magic Johnson. A huge Celtics fan, then now and forever, back then Larry and Magic were the show and I was besotted. And so was the nation.

Their rivalry was legendary, and in that shared history they ultimately became friends. The learned about the game from each other, they learned about themselves from each other and Magic says that Larry's presence on the court made him a better player and a better man. The great Boston Globe sports scribe, Jackie MacMullen, (who is from my home town of Westwood, MA, and who I know) had the incredible opportunity to co-author a book with these two legends. "When the Game Was Ours by Larry Bird and Magic Johnson" tells the tale of how these sports legends basketball careers coincided from college; Bird at Indiana State and Magic at Michigan State through to their NBA careers. Both men always observing the other, often time obsessing over achievements.

It is no surprise to me that on this Wednesday a new show on Broadway opens up entitled, "Magic Bird". It's a show that gives me goosebumps because it takes me back to a time when these two were Kings of the parquet and I was buying whatever they were selling. While sport and theatre may mirror each other in their spectacle, the real story here is of mutual respect, admiration, determination, perseverance and show business. Win or loose, we wanted to experience every second of it because we knew they wouldn't disappoint. We loved the show.

Here's hoping Magic Bird on Broadway doesn't disappoint.

This Just In....

Ok, so I never do this.
As a matter of fact, I don't think I've ever done this, but there's a first time for everything.

Beantown Breakthrough

This is very cool.

The medical minds over at MIT have come up with a potentially life-saving device in the battle against cancer. Dr. Omid Farokhzad and Dr. Robert Langer created an effective approach to cancer treatments by using targeted nanoparticles called BIND-014. These nanoparticles act as drones who seek out and deliver cancer killing medicines to cancer cells only. This could be the big Kahuna for cancer treatment.

What really caught my attention was the story of a woman cancer patient in this morning's Boston Herald. She had failed chemotherapy and radiation treatments and had exhausted all other options for her diagnosed stage two cervical cancer. Evelyn Sorensen was told by her doctors that she had about a year to set her affairs in order. She was urged to take a vacation, say goodbye to friends and family and prepare for the worst. The 47-year-old demanded to see a list of clinical trials from her radiologist and spotted the BIND-Bioscience trial, based in Cambridge.

Sorensen, who lived in Cambridge in the 1990's, joined the trial in August. "People in Cambridge really know what they are doing," Sorensen said. What she didn't know was that serendipitous moment would change the course of her life and reverse her death sentence. Her tumors shrank by 70 percent after her first treatment. Sorensen reported to no horrid side effects such as nauseua and hair loss. She even joked about the docs slipping her a "placebo mickey" because she felt no ill effects. In the six months since the trial, Evelyn's body has no cancer and is still taking the medication to stay that way. She is now strong enough to return to work and is exersicing regularly. Her family is amazed at how far she's come in six months. "I'm starting to feel like my old self," she said.

Thank God for medicine, money and the brilliant minds who devote their lives to making incredible science. BIND-014 is very interesting and how it works was explained to me like this:

-Imagine these nanoparticles like microscopic robots who have a targeted, cancer-detecting "GPS'".

-These microscopic robots have their work cut out for them. Our immune system is designed to stop them before they get to the cancer. Like a division of our armed forces elite, these tiny robots must be quick and stealth to evade the immune system.

-When they reach their target they release their cancer-killing medicine, then slowly biodegrade and get absorbed safely in the body.

One can only hope that his breakthrough brings life and hope for so many battling this devastating disease.

Old School

I'm thinking I have to go back to school, so to speak, because I need to do some "market research" for the future development of my business. I need to assess the viability of the retail market in my area so that I can make an informed decision about my next move. I'm doing my due diligence.

Since the last time I was in school was in 2000. I may be a little rusty and not sure if I'm quite ready for the comitment I need to make. Sure, I could hire someone who's already obtained most of the data that I need, but with the world of information at our finger tips today, I figure I can at least set myself on the path of knowledge all on my own. And who knows what I will find on my jorney?

Where do I start?

The Internet: of course! Google conquers all.
I was doing some research yesterday and I came across some very useful information along with some email addresses of people who would be willing to help. Email could prove to be a valuable and easy way to exchange information and network.

The library: Yup, the old school, tried and true public library. Whenever I needed to buckle down in school, the library was where I went. I always went to the silent part too. It was the most productive place for me to get my work done back then, so why not now? The librarian may also have some great tips on searching for more information or even getting me to that information.

Local Organizatiuons: The Retailers Association of MA is also be a great place to start. They offer free webinars and links to lots of business resourses.

Networking: Probably the most valuable way to garner information. Speaking to other retailers and comercial real estate agents in the area will undoubtedly shake some fruit from the trees. Like myself, these people have the pulse on whats really going on in the area when it comes to retail. We are the ones in the stores, talking and communicating directly with the consumer. We know their spending habits.

Looks like I got my work cut out for me.
If you've got any suggestions, or know of any magic mirrors that can tell me exactly what I should do, don't hesitate to let me know.

Until then, it looks like I'm rolling Old School.

Did Bama Get A Job In Advertising?

I was just minding my own business this morning.

I was working out on my elliptical, like I do almost every morning watching Good Morning America. (Katie Couric was guest hosing because Robin Roberts is on vacation. I hope they don't replace Robin, because I'm a huge Robin Roberts fan...)

Anyway, like I said, I was just minding my own business and this commercial came on. I could hardly believe it. You know the old saying that sex sells? Well holy Liquid Plumber! I might have even got a little hot and bothered, had I not been so surprised that this commercial was airing on morning TV. Imagine all the desperately dirty housewives out there in America after catching this PORNY ad? The househusbands of America could be rejoicing!!

For sure, it's got moxie. Judge for yourself:
